Canada exported 3.51 million tonnes of coal in March 2024, falling 1.56% on the year, according to data from Statistics Canada.
The volume, however, was 25.60% higher than the month-ago level, marking the second consecutive month of growth.
Value of the coal exports amounted to $1.22 billion in the month, declining 7.52% year on year yet rising 32.75% month on month, data showed.
The top three destinations for Canadian coal exports were South Korea, Japan and China's mainland in March. South Korea received 875,300 tonnes of coal, surging 174.82% on the year yet down 25.49% on the month. Shipments to Japan were 869,300 tonnes, down 29.00% year on year yet hiking 96.23% month on month.
Coal exports to China's mainland stood at 859,000 tonnes in the same month, declining 3.71% from a year ago yet climbing 25.42% on the month, data showed.
Canada's coal exports totaled 8.89 million tonnes over the first three months this year, decreasing 5.68% compared to the previous year. The value amounted to $3.00 billion, down 8.87% from a year ago.
