PT PLN (Persero), Indonesia's state-owned electricity company, has confirmed the availability of an ample coal supply for electricity generation during the Eid al-Fitr holiday in 2024.
Darmawan Prasodjo, head of PLN, said the current coal availability is significantly improved compared to the situation in 2021, sufficient for 20 days of use.
In 2021, PLN faced a crisis with coal inventories that could only sustain five days of operation at both PLN-owned and private power plants, before potential outages affecting 15 million PLN customers.
Prasodjo elaborated on the enhanced reliability of PLN's power system since 2023, attributing it to robust and consistent primary energy supplies to power plants. This improvement has resulted in coal inventories able to cover consumption for more than 20 days.
PLN currently serves 89 million domestic customers, covering a population of 275 million individuals with access to electricity within the country.
Regarding financial performance, Prasodjo disclosed that PLN's annual revenue reached Rp488 trillion ($30.7 billion), with electricity generation capacity at 72 GW and electrical transmission networks spanning 71 kilometers.
