Northern China's Inner Mongolia aims to produce 1.22 billion tonnes or so of coal this year, said Inner Mongolia's energy bureau.

To achieve this target, the region plans to keep the total production capacity at above 1.2 billion tonnes per annum.

Inner Mongolia produced 1.21 billion tonnes of coal last year, accounting for 26% of China's total. Notably, its coal production alone surpasses that of India, the world's second-largest coal producer.

Last year, Inner Mongolia sold 945 million tonnes of coal through medium- and long-term contracts, accounting for 36% of the national contract volumes.

The region has started 2024 on a positive note, with coal production up 1.7% on the year to 202.83 million tonnes in January-February. This achievement has propelled Inner Mongolia back to the top position in China's coal production, surpassing Shanxi's production of 177.34 million tonnes.

Inner Mongolia is positioning itself as a crucial energy base. In additional to coal production, it is also a leading power generator in the country. Last year, it delivered 306.5 TWh of electricity outside the region, ranking first for 19 consecutive years.

In terms of renewable energy development, Inner Mongolia boasts abundant wind and solar resources, driving rapid growth in this sector.

The administration anticipated its renewable capacity will exceed 100 GW in the first half of this year, making it the largest scale nationwide. Furthermore, renewable capacity is expected to surpass coal as the region's largest power source in the second half of the year.

Renewable energy capacity in Inner Mongolia expanded 50.8% to 93.23 GW by the end of 2023, accounting for 43.2% of total power capacity. Renewable generation soared 21.1% to 149.53 TWh for the full year, accounting for 20.1% of total electricity output, up 1.1 percentage points from a year earlier.
