Coal shipments from Australia's Gladstone port surged 79.9% from a year earlier to 5.04 million tonnes in February 2024, which however dipped 0.3% from a month ago, showed data from the Gladstone Ports Corporation.
Gladstone shipped 1.26 million tonnes of coal to Japan in the month, up 60.6% year on year yet down 32.5% month on month, while India received 1.09 million tonnes of coal from the port, soaring 171.0% from the corresponding period last year and 38.1% on the month.
Coal exports to South Korea were 774,000 tonnes in February, falling 2.7% on the year yet rising 17.8% on the month, data showed.
Around 70% of Gladstone coal exports are metallurgical coal, used for steelmaking, and the rest 30% are thermal coal for power generation.
The exports amounted to 10.10 million tonnes over the first two months, up 19.0% from a year ago, data showed.
