Two coal mine accidents occurred in Anhui and Shanxi provinces on March 11, resulting in 12 deaths and 4 missing miners. Frequent accidents further highlighted the grave situation of safety production.

At 12:10 pm on March 11, a gas explosion occurred at Xieqiao coal mine in Anhui, when 24 miners were working underground. 22 were lifted to the ground after rescue, while seven died and other injured miners were in stable condition. Rescue efforts are currently underway to reach the two miners still trapped, local media reported.

A shaft bunker collapsed at a coal mine in Zhongyang county, luliang city, Shanxi province late March 11, burying seven miners. As of 7:00 a.m. on March 12, five were found dead. Two are still missing, and search efforts are currently underway, according to state media CCTV.

The Xieqiao coal mine, operated by the branch of Huaihe Energy Group Co., Ltd., is designed with production capacity of 9.6 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa), with risks of coal and gas bursts. The group totally has 11 operating mines as of now, with the combined capacity of 77.90 Mtpa, according to data tracked by Sxcoal's Capacity Database.

There are currently 14 operational mines in Zhongyang county, with a total capacity of 17.40 Mtpa. The mine where the accident occurred is designed with capacity of 1.50 Mtpa, and it is classified as a low-gas mine, Sxcoal data showed.

The group's high-gas and coal-and-gas outburst mines with total cacacity of 54.90 Mtpa, as well as all operating mines in Zhongyang county, may face temporary shutdowns and rectifications.

The occurrence of two coal mines accidents on the same day forced governments and relevant departments to tighten safety inspections and rectify the identified issues and hazards.
