Poland intends to set a deadline for coal-fired power, Reuters reported on January 15, citing the country's Secretary of State for Climate Urszula Zielinska.
Zielinska did not give a specific timeline but emphasized the importance of setting a clear end date, stating that "Only with an end date can we plan, and only with an end date can industries and individuals alike make informed plans for the future."
Coal, the most CO2-emitting fossil fuel, currently accounts for approximately 70% of the nation's power generation.
The previous administration had reached an agreement with trade unions to continue coal mining until 2049. However, scientists argue that significant reductions in coal-related emissions must be achieved in this decade to avert severe consequences of climate change.
