Japan's Ishikari Bay New Port offshore wind farm started commercial operation on January 1, 2024, which was the largest offshore wind farm in Japan and also one of the first batches of wind farms built offshore.
The wind farm, located near the Ishikari city in northern Hokkaido in Japan, was jointly operated by Japan's largest power generation company JERA and Green Power Investment Corporation. The total power capacity of the wind farm reached 112 MW.
The wind farm consisted of 14 8-MW turbines provided by Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy. It also incorporated 180 MWh of battery storage capacity, helping reduce electricity fluctuations and supply consistent power to the Hokkaido Electric Power Network, which would purchase the farm's entire power output within 20 years.
A joint venture between Shimizu Corporation and Nippon Steel Engineering Co., Ltd. was responsible for offshore construction and Kajima Corporation for onshore construction.
Offshore wind power generation registered slow development in Japan partly affected by typhoons, volcanoes and earthquakes in the region. Nonetheless, the wind power generation capacity is anticipated to reach at least 10 GW by 2030 and 45 GW by 2040, according to Japan's government plan.
