Gansu province in northwestern China has received approval from the National Development and Reform Commission on five new coal mines with a total production capacity of 22.7 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa) this year, state media reported.

The five mines are Turu east open-pit mine, Pingshanhu 1# mine, Anjiazhuang, Tangjiahe and Jiulongchuan. Among them, the last two large mines are newly approved by the NDRC.  

Jiulongchuan coal mine, located in Ningzheng mining area, was approved with a construction scale of 8 Mtpa with a total investment of 16.5 billion yuan ($2.3 billion). It is listed as a key construction project in the province's 14^th Five-Year Plan.

Tangjiahe mine has a construction scale of 5 Mtpa and requires a total investment of about 7.5 billion yuan.

Gansu has rich coal resources, with coal reserves accounting for about a quarter of China's total. In particular, 83% of its coal resources are concentrated in Longdong, of which coal reserves in Qingyang and Pingliang take up more than 90% of the province's total.

Gansu aims to extract 70 Mt of coal by 2025, according to the province's general plan of mineral resources over 2021-2025.

During January-October this year, Gansu churned out 49.86 million tonnes of raw coal, up 10.8% year on year, accounting for 1.3% of China's total, according to data from the National Bureau of Statistics.

In 2022, the province's coal production reached 53.52 million tonnes, growing 23.2% on the year, accounting for 1.2% of China's total.
