China's cumulative power generation capacity of all sources totaled 2,599.93 GW by the end of February, an 8.5% rise year on year, data from the National Energy Administration (NEA) showed.
Thermal power (mostly from coal) had the highest capacity of 1,337.86 GW, a 3.0% year-on-year rise, followed by hydropower capacity (414.25 GW, 5.5% YoY), solar (413.04 GW, 30.8% YoY), wind (371.26 GW, 11.0% YoY) and nuclear (55.57 GW, 4.3% YoY).
In January-February, Power generation units of all sources averaged 569 hours of utilization, a 28-hour decrease from the same period in 2022. Thermal power utilization averaged 720 hours (-39 hours YoY), hydropower 364 hours (-45 hours YoY), nuclear 1,209 hours (+14 hours YoY), wind 401 hours (+78 hours YoY) and solar 182 hours (stable).
China's power generation totaled 1,349.7 TWh in January-February, a 0.7% rise year on year, data from the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) showed last week.
During the same period, thermal power generation totaled 975.7 TWh, a 2.3% decrease year-on-year, while hydropower fell 3.4% to 136.7 TWh. Wind generated 133.7 TWh, a 30.2% increase and nuclear 66.8 TWh, up 4.3%. Solar power generation was 37 TWh, a 9.3% rise.
In January-February, China's major power companies invested a total of 67.6 billion yuan ($9.81 billion) in electricity projects, up 43.6% year on year, NEA data showed. Of this, 8.7 billion yuan was invested in nuclear projects, up 44.8% YoY, 28.3 billion yuan in solar projects, soaring 199.9% YoY, and 31.9 billion yuan for network construction, a 2.2% rise.
Investments in hydropower and thermal power projects fell 20.2% and 7.6%, respectively, while wind projects saw a 15.6% rise to stand at 14.3 billion yuan.
