The U.K. National Grid has announced that the government is considering reserving some coal-fired power plants as backup power for next winter to ensure sufficient electricity supply.
However, operators such as EDF Energy and Drax have indicated that their coal-fired plants will not be operational by then, as they have submitted plans to the government to shut down their remaining coal-fired units by March 31, 2023.
The National Grid said the government is looking to sign contracts with its coal-fired power plants for potential emergency use for the winter in 2023-24.
The U.K. is aiming to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. As part of the measures, it plans to shut down all coal-fired power plants by October 2024.
This winter, the U.K.'s backup coal-fired power plants have been used only once, when a cold snap hit in March.
