India, the world's second-largest steel producer, has several initiatives underway to increase domestic raw coking coal production to 140 million tonnes by 2030, more than doubling the production of 51.7 million tonnes during the fiscal year 2021-2022 based on the data released by the coal ministry.
The India government aims to step up production after identifying four coking coal blocks, media reported.
India's target of higher domestic coking coal production was partly ascribed to high import prices and its high reliance on imports.
The country imports about 90% of its coal requirement, with a great part coming from Australia, and is working to diversify sources, increasing intakes from countries like Canada, U.S., Indonesia and Mozambique.
India's state-run Coal India ltd is expected to step up production capacity by FY 2024-25. It has planned to increase raw coking coal production by up to 26 million tonnes from existing mines and also discovered a maximum capacity of about 22 million tonnes from nine new mines.
