Central China's Hubei province has braced for this cold winter heating season with sufficient coal inventory, with efforts to cooperate with mines and railway department to secure rail inflows, according to a report by Hubei Daily.
At present, all 20 coal-fired power plants across the province have 5.52 million tonnes of coal in total, equivalent to 21.8 days of generation. This, however, slid a little from 5.58 million tonnes by the end of November.
Coal covers the majority of power supply in the province. As the winter peak demand season is coming, power plants are trying their best to secure coal supply from mines. There were more than 2,000 wagons of coal arriving in Hubei via railways from the end of November. These 20 power plants received 170,000 tonnes of coal each day on average.
Huadian Hubei power plant, the largest coal-fired generator in the province, has more than 7.7 GW of power generation capacity in total. To obtain coal as much as possible, the company stationed crew members in Yulin, Shaanxi province to make sure that every tonne of coal is transported as planned. In July-November, it managed to get additional 1.18 million tonnes via long-term contracts.
Hubei also stepped up coal storage at port of Jingzhou, a newly-built large coal storage place. Currently, it has 300,000 tonnes of coal in stock, ready for any pressing needs when extreme weather happens.
According to government policy, coal plants need to maintain regular stockpiles above 15 days of use.
