Eastern China's Shandong province will accelerate construction of new coal-fired power capacity to ensure its energy security.
Coal power projects planned during the 13th Five-Year Plan period should be prioritized, where a 2*350 MW project should come online before the summer and another 2.6 GW unit should be put into commission by the end of this year, according to a conference in Shandong on May 15.
The construction of new capacity is in sync with small and outdated capacity elimination. By 2025, the province will add 7 GW of clean and high-efficient coal units while quitting all units with a capacity of 300 MW and below.
The province will strengthen power purchases from other provinces, aiming to raise the intake to at least 20 GW during peak periods.
China's Premier Li Keqaing stressed steady energy supply again during his 3-day tour to southwest China's Yunnan province, saying the nation will "resolutely" prevent any repeat of the power crunch that struck China last autumn.
