Colombia's coal production is expected to recover around 20% in 2021 from a year ago, said Diego Mesa, the Minister of Mines and Energy.
Coal is the major source of income for Colombia, and its coal production slumped 40% year on year to 49.5 million tonnes in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic and a 91-day strike at major mine Cerrejon, with quarterly output at 12.37 million tonnes,
Colombia is one major coal producer, and produced about 19 million tonnes per quarter before the outburst of the pandemic, while its current output stood at around 13.7-14 million tonnes.
"We have significant growth," Mesa said. "We're not going to hit pre-pandemic levels yet, but we expect growth of close to 20%."
