German's electricity generation from hard coal increased by more than 35% in the first six months of 2021, indicating col still played a vital role in keeping the lights on, Reuters reported, citing an industry group.
The combination of cold snaps and lower wind supply boosted coal-fired power output to 25 TWh, increasing 35.6% year on year, according to importers group VDki on July 28.
When unfavorable weather cause shortfall of power generated from green power, coal, natural gas and nuclear provide the remainders, especially without enough power storage.
Industrial statistics showed that renewable generation in the first half of the year fell 8.1% on the year and conventional power production climbed 19.7% year on year, due to weather-related factors.
Typically, coal is intentionally marginalized in the power supply mix, while carbon-free wind and solar power were given priority on transport grid.
Lignite gives out more emissions than hard coal, and fossil fuel faces a crash transformation. The energy regulator opened a fourth round of auctions for hard coal closures on July 26, after the first three produced permits to shut 8,435 MW of capacity.
