South African coal production recovered to a four-month high in March but was still 5.8% lower than the year-ago level, government data showed.
In March, the country's production totaled 20.3 million tonnes. The decline from a year ago is mainly due to reduced capacity owing to COVID-19 pandemic.
In addition, demand from South Africa's largest coal buyer India remained weak due to pandemic.
Weather-related factors disrupted its coal railings, and inventories at Richards Bay also fell to a two-year low of only 2.5 million tonnes.
South Africa produced a total of 55 million tonnes of coal in January-March, 13.4% lower than year-earlier level.
