China imported a total of 124.55 million tonnes of thermal coal (including bituminous and sub-bituminous coals but excluding lignite) in 2020, climbing 7.90% year on year, showed the latest data from the General Administration of Customs (GAC).
The country's thermal coal intakes came in at 13.45 million tonnes in December, surging 15 times compared with the same month a year ago and up 257.71% from the previous month, data showed.
The import value soared 16 times from a year ago and climbed 291.11% from a month ago to $730.48 million in December. Price of imported thermal coal was averaged $54.31/t in the month, up $4.64/t from a month ago and $4.65/t from the previous year.
The cumulative imports amounted to $7.28 billion in 2020, down 7.48% year on year.
China imported 20.42 million tonnes of lignite in December, surging 7 times from the month-ago level and comparing with only 20,000 tonnes in the year-ago month, data showed.
The import figure sent the total lignite intakes to 99.26 million tonnes last year, down 3.3% compared with 2019, with the accumulative import amount falling 13.5% to $3.85 billion.
