Vietnam produced 48.60 million tonnes of coal in 2020, up 5.33% compared with a year ago, showed the latest customs data.
The country's coal production stood at 3.60 million tonnes in December 2020, down 7.7% year on year and falling 5.26% compared with the preceding month, according to the General Statistics Office.
With effective control of COVID-19 pandemic, Vietnam's economic improved in the last quarter in 2020. The country's GDP increased by 4.48% year on year during October-December quarter, statistics data showed.
Vietnam's GDP is expected to grow by 6.8% in 2021, according to a report released by the World Bank on December 21, 2020.
The country's cement output was expected to reach 9.9 million tonnes in December 2020, an increase of 13.8% from a year ago and 3.13% from the previous month; crude steel output was estimated at 4.33 million tonnes, up 130% year on year and 3.8% from the month-ago level.
Vietnam's coal imports hit a record high last year, at 54.81 million tonnes, surging 25% from the 43.85 million tonnes in 2019, according to data from Vietnam customs.
The overall power generation in the country reached 19.1 TWh in December, an increase of 3.24% from the 18.5 TWh in the same month last year, and an increase of 1.06% from the 18.9 TWh in November.
Despite government's plan to vigorously develop renewable energy in the next decade to reduce its dependence on fossil fuels, there are still a large number of proposed and on-going coal projects in Vietnam to support the country's demand.
In December, the Institute of Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEEFA) stated Vietnam may continue to develop 15 coal-fired power generation projects with a total installed capacity of 15 GW by 2026.
