Japan's thermal coal imports in December fell 13.8% on the year to 9.26 million tonnes, according to preliminary statistics from its Ministry of Finance.
December's thermal coal imports were worth 71.85 billion yen ($694.1 million), down 34.3% year on year.
Imports from Russia rose 21.1% to 1.96 million tonnes, while the import value declined 10% to $15.7 billion yen; inbound shipments from the US declined 7.7% to 0.87 million tonnes, with the value down 29.2% to $9.84 billion yen.
Full-year output totaled 105 million tonnes, down 5.58% from 111.2 million tonnes in 2019, hitting a new low since 2011, the data showed.
Japan's LNG imports increased 13.4% year on year to 7.72 million tonnes in December.
