Japan's anthracite imports in September reached a new high since June, but still 15.72% lower than the average in the past five years, suggesting its demand was yet to fully recover from the pandemic.
Japan imported 436,700 tonnes of anthracite in September, up 51.21% from a month ago but still 16.53% lower than the year-ago level, showed the latest data from Japan Ministry of Finance (MOF).
In September, the country imported most anthracite from Australia, reaching 242,100 tonnes, up 97.96% year on year and 70.13% month on month. Russia ranked the second with a total volume of 193,200 tonnes, down 4.26% year on year but up 61.4% month on month.
The two country represented 99.68% of its total imports in September, with Australia accounting for 55.44% and Russia 44.24%, compared to a proportion of 61.95% in September 2019, with Australia 23.38% and Russia 38.57%.
The overall import value of anthracite in September totaled 4.69 billion yen ($44.86 million), down 44.65% year on year but up 31.69% month on month. The average import price was calculated at 10,734.31 yen/t, down 33.69% YoY and 12.91% MoM, hitting the lowest since November 2016.
In the year to September, Japan imported 3.61 million tonnes of anthracite in total, down 14.99% year on year.
