India imported 3.35 million tonnes of coking coal in August, rebounding significantly by 57.7% from a month ago, according to data compiled by Iman Resources.
The improved demand suggests a significant recovery of domestic industrial activities and economy following lifting of COVID-19-induced lockdown measures.
The August figure, however, was still 25.14% lower compared with the year-ago level, data showed.
India imported the most coking coal from its top supplier Australia last month, at 2.42 million tonnes, down 34.92% year on year but up 32.35% on the month.
Intakes from Canada stood at 297,800 tonnes in August, up 6.22% from a year ago and surging 103% month on month.
India imported 265,600 tonnes and 214,000 tonnes of coking coal from Mozambique and the U.S, respectively, climbing 160% and 13.9% year on year.
Over January-August, India's total coking coal imports reached 26.24 million tonnes, falling 22.16% from the same period in 2019.
The country purchased 18.48 million tonnes from Australia, down 25.43% YoY; and 3.38 million tonnes from Canada, down 32.48% YoY.
PCI coal imports of India declined 18.52% year on year to 999,400 tonnes in August, putting total PCI coal intakes to 7.70 million tonnes during the first eight months, down 14.93% year on year.
