China's top 3 coal provinces raw coal output reaches 1.74 Bt in Jan-Aug

Three major coal-rich provinces – Shanxi, Inner Mongolia and Shaanxi – registered a combined raw coal output of 1.74 billion tonnes in first eight months of 2020, accounting for 70.92% of the total, said the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS).


Over the same period, China produced 2.45 billion tonnes of raw coal, a year-on-year fall of 0.1%, holding flat with first seven months.


Specifically, Shanxi province produced 675.86 million tonnes, up 4.1% year on year, accounting for 27.58% of the total.


Inner Mongolia contributed 25.85% of the total, at 633.51 million tonnes in the year to August, down 10.4% year on year.


Shaanxi province with 428.51 million tonnes of raw coal took 17.49% of the nationwide raw coal output, 11.8% higher than a year ago.


In August, the national raw coal production slid 0.1% to 325.81 million tonnes, marking a month-on-month increment of 2.48%. The daily output therefore was calculated at 10.51 million tonnes, 250,000 tonnes higher than the month-ago level.


August witnessed 5 provinces each with over 10 million tonnes of raw coal production, totaling 265.55 million tonnes, taking 81.5% of the country's total.


In August last year, four provinces each reported output above 10 million tonnes, adding up to a total 246.17 million tonnes, accounting for 77.9% of the nationwide production.


Shanxi (94.78 Mt), Inner Mongolia (80.11 Mt), Shaanxi (60.29 Mt), Xinjiang (20.02 Mt) and Guizhou (10.35 Mt) were among the top 5 provinces whose raw coal output surpassed 10 million tonnes in August this year.


Specifically, Shanxi province's raw coal production in August saw a year-on-year rise of 11.8% and a month-on-month increment of 5.94%.


Inner Mongolia's production fell 13.4% year on year, but inched up 0.04% from July.


The raw coal production of Shaanxi was 4.5% higher than a year ago and 4.93% higher than July.


In August 2020, China's 9 provinces enjoyed a year-on-year increase of raw coal output, and Gansu province saw the largest year-on-year rise of 27% among others. Guangxi suffered the largest year-on-year decrease of 34.3% with only 222,000 tonnes.


On the month-on-month basis, 14 provinces boasted a pickup in August, among which, Jiangxi province witnessed the biggest increment of 53.16%. Qinghai province's raw coal output logged the steepest decline of 44.05%.
