Xuzhou, a major coke production city in eastern China's Jiangxu province, has only three coke firms left in operation by the end of June, Xuzhou Daily reported lately, citing local officials.
Four cokemaking companies were shut down by the end of last month, and the rest were optimized and integrated into three comprehensive coke firms with capacity combined at 8.59 million tonnes per annum (Mtpa), down from original designed capacity of 15.69 Mtpa.
Xuzhou has withdrawn total coke capacity of 7.1 Mtpa since 2018, through capacity shutdown, integration and conversion, in line with the country's long-term strategy of reducing coal consumption share in energy mix.
The city reportedly had maintained 11 coking enterprises before June 2018, with a total production capacity of 15.69 Mtpa, with major product of Grade II and Quasi Grade I coke.
Coke was mainly sold to local steelmakers and mills in southern part of the Jiangsu, Fujian and other southern areas.
