Japan's coking coal imports in May dropped to a record low since January 2015 when sxcoal.com started recording, according to official data.
The country imported 4.65 million tonnes of coking coal in May, dropping 24.64% compared with the month-ago level and down 13.27% from a year ago, showed data from the Japan Ministry of Finance.

Japan's coking coal imports were worth 57.38 billion yen ($532.4 million) in May, falling 30.31% on the month. The average import price was calculated at 12,329.36 yen/t, dropping 7.51% from a month ago.
The country's imports of hard coking coal amounted to 1.57 million tonnes, decreasing 22% on the year and down 34.1% on the month. The import value came in at 25.0 billion yen. The average import price was 15,948.51 yen/t, inching down 2.51% from the previous month.
Imports of other coking coals totaled 3.09 million tonnes, decreasing 8.03% year on year and down 18.69% month on month, with value of 32.36 billion yen. Its import price averaged 10,488.81 yen/t, down 8.24% on the month.
Australia, the largest coking coal supplier to Japan in May, shipped 2.50 million tonnes of coal to the country, increasing 9.56% on the year but down 12.04% on the month.
Indonesia came behind with 0.76 million tonnes of coking coal exported to Japan in the same month, falling 14.42% year on year and 20.32% on the month.
Followed was America, shipping 568,900 tonnes of coking coal to Japan in May, falling 40.26% on the year and down 12.75% on the month.
