Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL), India's second biggest coal producer, produced 6.23 million tonnes of coal in April-May 2020, down 45% year on year.
SCCL is 51% owned by the government of Telangana and 49% owned by India's central government.
During the two month, the shipment volumes dropped to 5.59 million tonnes, slumping 50.6% year on year and much lower than the company's target of 10.37 million tonnes.
In May, the miner produced 3.23 million tonnes of the fossil fuel, a decline of 45% year on year while dispatches fell 56% on year to 2.55 million tonnes. SCCL attributed the production and shipment decline to the country's nationwide lockdown to curb the spread of Covid-19.
During the fiscal year ended on March 31 2020, SCCL produced 64.02 million tonnes of coal, just fell behind of its target of 67 million tonnes. SCCL operates 27 underground and 18 open-cast mines and supplies around 66% of its coal to power utilities.
