Coal imports through Erenhot, the only one rail border crossing connecting China with Mongolia, rose 2.4-fold year on year to 805,000 tonnes in the first four months this year, official data showed.
Import value increased 2.7 times year on year to 220 million yuan ($30.9 million), translating to average import price of 279 yuan/t, up 11.1% on the year, showed data from Xilingol government website.
The surge in imports came as large volumes of Mongolian coal that arrived at Erenhot in December last year cleared customs this January as the country restricted coal imports by end of last year.
Apart from this, the sharp rise in coal imports was also spurred by tightening domestic supply this year due to mining disruption at massive coal mines impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic.
