South Korea's thermal coal imports climbed 22.21% from a record low a month ago to 5.9 million tonnes in April, according to latest data from South Korea customs.
Total imports (including bituminous coal and sub-bituminous coal) were still 4.92% lower than the year-ago level, data showed.

Bituminous coal
South Korea imported 7.07 million tonnes of bituminous coal in April, a decrease of 4.26% year on year but increasing 21.35% from a month ago.
Australia shipped largest volume of bituminous coal to the country, reaching 2.27 million tonnes, edging up 0.72 % year on year and surging 30.85% on the month.
Indonesia followed with shipments at 1.6 million tonnes to South Korea, slumping 40.44% from the preceding year and down 26.26% on the month.
Imports from Russia increased 13.65% on the year to 1.6 million tonnes, which was also 66.35% higher compared with the March level.
In April, total bituminous coal imports cost $482 million, up 20.95% from a month ago. That translated to an average import price of $68.21/t, down 14.19% YoY and 0.34% MoM.
Sub-bituminous coal
South Korea imported 140,100 tonnes of sub-bituminous coal in April, down 29.24% YoY but up 89.32% MoM.
Indonesia exported 139,000 tonnes sub-bituminous coal to the country, falling 29.8% YoY but up 90.67% MoM.
Value of sub-bituminous coal imports was $7.17 million last month, a slump of 56.46% YoY, which translated to an average import price of $51.15/t, rising 11.07% YoY but down 17.36% MoM.
