China's coal consumption fell to 57.7% of the total energy mix in 2019, down from 59.2% a year earlier, according to a meeting summoned by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment on May 15.
The decline in coal consumption share was attributed to further optimization of China's energy structure amid multi-year efforts, said Liu Bingjiang, director with the ministry.
The proportion of clean energy rose to 23.4% last year, a year-on-year increase of 1.3 percentage points, according to Liu. He added coal-fired boilers each with capacity below 35T/h have generally been phased out in key areas.
"Clean heating pivot cities expand to more areas in northern China last year, generally covering all the '2+26' cities and Fenwei Plain area," he introduced.
China's environment improved accordingly, with PM 2.5 density at 261 cities decreasing by 2.4%, which, however, was slower than an average decline of 7.7% in the previous three years.
