North Seas Energy Ministers reinforce cooperation on offshore wind power

Energy Ministers from North Seas countries met on December 4 in Brussels and agreed their 2020 Work Programme on offshore wind energy deployment as a means of reaching climate neutrality by 2050.

The 10 North Seas Energy Cooperation countries – Belgium, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, Luxembourg, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and the UK – agreed at their Ministerial meeting in Esbjerg in June 2019 to broaden the scope of their cooperation.

At 50, Europe's oldest nuclear plant not ready to retire

Europe's oldest functioning nuclear reactor, at Switzerland's Beznau plant, will turn 50 next week -- a lifespan deemed dangerously long by environmentalists who are demanding that it be shut down immediately.

Commercial operation began at the plant in the northern canton of Aargau, near the German border, on December 9, 1969 – back when The Beatles were still together and a man had just walked on the Moon.

China helps Kazakhstan build solar, wind power plants

China has helped implement two renewable energy projects in the Almaty region, southern Kazakhstan – the construction of a 5 MW wind farm and a 1 MW solar power station (SES), the Kazakh Energy Ministry said recently.

Following an agreement between the two countries in 2011, the Chinese side donated new equipment for the construction of the wind park and solar park at no costs, the energy ministry said.

SW China city to explore electric power block chain transactions

China has always been at the forefront of the world's scientific and technological development. At the end of November this year, a block chain and electric power trading theme were organized in conjunction with each other at a conference held in Chengdu, the capital city of southwestern China's Sichuan province.

In October this year, Chinese President Xi Jinping has proposed an upgrade to the country's block chain technology on a national, strategic level.

China makes steady progress in adoption of clean energy

Construction of new coal-fired power plants across the world fell to their lowest level in a decade in 2018, with China accounting for nearly two-thirds of the fall, a new report said.

After peaking at 84 gigawatts of new capacity in 2015, coal project completions plummeted to 39 GW in 2018, demonstrating the steady progress in energy transition, said the report from Bloomberg New Energy Finance, or BNEF, a wholly owned unit of Bloomberg.

Hainan Changjiang nuclear power generation exceeds 9 TWh

Power generation from Hainan Changjiang Nuclear Power Plant has exceeded 9 TWh so far this year, setting a fresh record since its commencement, according to operator Hainan Nuclear Power Co., Ltd.

Changjiang phase I project has two nuclear units in operation, with their official commencement dates respectively on December 25, 2015 and August 6, 2016. By the end of November, two units have generated over 30 TWh of electricity since their commercial service.

China walks the talk on climate change

A World Meteorological Organization study published last week found that levels of heat-trapping greenhouse gases in the atmosphere have hit another record high.

Extreme weather events and natural disasters are hitting more and more parts of the world, from raging wildfires in Australia, the United States, and even in Brazil's Amazon rainforest, to stronger hurricanes and record-breaking cold snaps.
