Newcastle Sep coal exports to China down 22.78% MoM
Coal exports from Australian Newcastle terminals (Carrington and Kooragang) to China dropped by 22.78% in September, compared with the previous month, the second successive monthly drop after a peak in July, showed data from the Port Waratah Coal Services, operator of the two terminals.
The volume, accounting for 12.56% of the total exports of the two terminals, surged 237.24% from the year-ago level.
Australia's Gladstone port Sep coal exports to China sink to 3-1/2-yr low
Coal exports of Australia's Gladstone port to China plunged 80.12% from a year earlier to the lowest level since March 2016, amid ongoing uncertainty of Chinese import restriction on Australian coal.
In September, Gladstone port shipped 159,800 tonnes of coal to China, tumbling 78.84% from the preceding month, according to data from Gladstone Ports Corporation.
Indonesia sets coal reference price at 3-yr low of $64.8/t in Oct
Indonesia's Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources has set its October thermal coal reference price, also known as Harga Batubara Acuan or HBA, at $64.8/t, notching the lowest level since October 2016.
The decline was mainly due to weak global coal prices amid dismal demand from European market and lower purchases from Asian countries as coal production increased.

The coal ministry has received valid interest for only six coal mines out of the 27 which were offered for the iron & steel, cement, and captive power plant end-use. Auction of 21 coal mines has been cancelled by the ministry as it received less than three bids for them.
According to the norms of the coal auction under the Coal Mines Nationalisation Act, each mine requires minimum three bids for the government to hold auction.
Coal India says lost 2.1% of annual output due to strikes at eastern Indian unit
Coal India Ltd has lost 13 million tonnes, or 2.1%, of its annual output this financial year, due to strikes at eastern Indian Talcher coalfields, one of India's biggest, a spokesman for the company's unit said on October 9.
Coal India produced 606.87 million tonnes of coal during the year ended March 2019, and aims to produce 660 million tonnes this year. But the highest monsoon rainfall in 25 years and frequent strikes have kept output 6% lower than last year during the first six months, with September production falling 23.5%.
Chile largest coal mine closure may spur imports from Indonesia
Chile is likely to resume imports of sub-bituminous coal from Indonesia, as its largest domestic coal mine is facing risk of closure in the near term, sources reported.
Mina Invierno, Chile's largest coal mine with 2 million tonnes of sub-bituminous being produced previously, would probably face closure next month, if local court's ruling on a lift of explosive devices license can't be reversed, sources said.
Glencore, Tohoku in deadlock over coal contract negotiation
Global miner Glencore and Japan's Tohoku Electric Power are divided over price for their annual thermal coal supply contracts starting from October, sources said.
Glencore intended to reach the agreement at a mid-$70s FOB for 6,000 Kcal/kg NAR thermal coal at Newcastle port, Australia, while Tohoku is reluctant to set the price beyond $67/t FOB, IHS Markit reported last week.
Turkey Aug thermal coal imports jump 67.18% MoM
Turkey witnessed a clear 67.18% month-on-month growth in thermal coal imports in August, which was also 22.4% higher than the preceding year, the latest statistics data showed.
The country's total thermal coal imports came in at 2.8 million tonnes in August, data showed.
