China's coal imports notched a half-year new high in July, showed official data, as main consumers from power sector ratcheted up purchases of overseas cargoes to meet rising demand in hot summer.
Import coal volumes were at 32.89 million tonnes last month, up 13.37% year on year and 21.36% month on month, according to figures released by the General Administration of Customs on August 8.
Value of the July imports lost 4.09% from a year ago but gained 20.48% from the month before to $2.65 billion in the month, netting back to an average import price of $80.7/t, representing a drop of $14.69/t on the year and $0.59/t on the month.
China saw coal imports go up 7% from a year earlier to 187.36 million tonnes over January-July, which were valued at $14.74 billion, shrinking 4.5% year on year, showed the data.
